April 2023 Cruise - Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam from Ft. Lauderdale to San Diego via the Panama Canal

Our April cruise through the Panama Canal started on Easter Sunday as we left Ft. Lauderdale in a thunderstorm. We made stops at Grand Turk, Aruba, Cartagena, Colombia, through the Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Puerta Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and finally to San Diego. The Panana Canal transit was fascinating and took all day. There was a wide variety of ships going through the canal.  We stayed a few extra days in San Diego to see the sights there. We had an excellent experience on the Nieuw Amsterdam.

 After 7 days at sea, we made our first stop at Praia da Vitoria, Terceiera, Azores. The Azores are an archipelago made up of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean. They are about 2/3 of the way across the Atlantic from the USA. The nine islands are clustered into three groups...Flores and Corvo are westernmost; Graciosa, Terciera, Sao Jorge, Pico and Faial are centrally located; and the Formiga Islets are to the east.  An autonomous region of Portugal, the Azores are 870 miles west of Lisbon. Each group of islands is home to one of the branches of government.  Ponta Delgado, is home to the executive branch, Angra do Heroismo is home to the judicial and Horta is home to the legislative branch. The population of the Azores is 236,440 and it's main industries are agriculture, dairy farming, livestock, fishing and tourism. Crossing the Atlantic

We left Ft. Lauderdale on Holland America's Zuiderdam around 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 on our 28 day Transatlantic and Baltic cruise. We'll be spending 7 days crossing the Atlantic Ocean to our first stop in Praia di Vitoria Terceira in the Azores. As I write this we are on day four of the crossing and are easing into the relaxed rhythms of sea days. We spend the day relaxing, exercising, learning to play bridge, reading on our verandah, enjoying the good food and cocktails, going to shows and going to the casino. I've been going to a tai chi class in the morning but missed it today as we've started a 3 day process of losing an hour each day so we'll be in the correct time zone once we get to Europe. Essentially we will have three 23 hour days in a row!  It's making getting up in the morning a bit more challenging! So far the crossing has been pretty smooth. Manta, Ecuador and King Neptune Ceremony

Manta, Ecuador and King Neptune Ceremony  Tuna boats off our ship Our Thanksgiving was spent in Manta, Ecuador, called the tuna capitol of the world. Unfortunately I was hit with a bout of vertigo late Wednesday night and was down for the count all day Thursday so we didn't get off the ship.  Dan took some photos of the city, the smallest one we've visited so far, so at least I was able to see something.  I slept most of the day, but we were able to see the Packers Lions game on our room TV so that was a plus. We had room service for our Thanksgiving dinner and enjoyed turkey with all the trimmings. The day was not quite what I had hoped for but what can we do! I woke up today feeling better so we went to the port talk on Lima,  to the 5th session of beginner's bridge and to the King Neptune Ceremony.
